SUNNYVALE, Calif., Aug. 3, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Intuitive Surgical (Nasdaq:ISRG) today awarded simulator grants to five top U.S. medical centers to advance the field of training for robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery. The University of Rochester Medical Center, University of Virginia School of Medicine, University of Nevada School of Medicine, University of Maryland School of Medicine and University of Miami, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center will each receive a da Vinci Surgical System Surgeon Console and Skills Simulator™ for one year to pursue novel research initiatives.
The 2015 call for grant proposals encouraged applicants to focus on specific key areas of interest for da Vinci surgeon training, highlighting Intuitive Surgical's identification of training needs and the company's commitment to supporting impactful research to address those needs, including how skills learned in a virtual-reality environment translate to improved inter-operative skills.

"Through these grants, we are positively impacting surgical robotics training and offering surgical residents and community surgeons the opportunity to hone their robotic-assisted surgical skills."
Over 50 applications submissions were received, with the winning submissions selected through a rigorous process that included multiple reviews by researchers in the field of virtual reality simulation and training. Applicants were rated on their proposal's scientific rigor and likelihood to advance the field of surgeon education research. Finalists then completed a phone interview with members of the review committee to present their project.

"This grant enables forward-looking programs to develop best-practices for integrating robotics into surgical training."
